Cummins Diesel Ram 1500
1/2 Ton Cummins Powered Ram
News of the Cummins 4.2L V-6 and 5.6L V-8 was released prior to 2008. The engines were in the final stages of development when truck sales took a turn for the worse and Dodge/Chrysler was forced to set aside their plans for a diesel powered Ram 1500. We speculate that Ram truck sales have yet to recover enough to make a diesel engine a feasable option at this point in time. Here's what we know about the 4.2L Cummins V-6 and 5.6L Cummins V-8:

There was talk that the 5.6L V-8 could even become the standard engine option on the 2500/3500 Ram, with the larger inline 6 still being an option. Cummins has earned a reputation of durability in their engine designs, and we'd expect to see that in the 4.2L and 5.6L. Prototype trucks showed excellent driveability and fuel economy capability. The cast iron 788 lb V-8 seems a little hefty for a 1/2 ton truck, but we're sure that will be taken into consideration if and when Ram engineers design the truck to receive it. The 1/2 ton Cummins powered Ram is currently on an indefinite hold, but we've got a feeling that the engine will be ready when truck sales improve and their is a market for a Diesel Ram 1500.
