Select service procedures are required more frequently if using a biodiesel blend greater than B5. Service intervals for these procedures are not affected if using a biodiesel blend of B5 or less. A maximum B20 biodiesel blend is compatible with the EcoDiesel; using a B6 - B20 blend requires a modified maintenance schedule to compensate for the fuel's distinct properties. Frequent towing/hauling and off-road use also affects the recommended intervals of select service procedures.
3.0 EcoDiesel maintenance schedule
Service Procedure |
Service/Replacement Interval(s) |
Remarks/Notes |
Replace engine air filter |
Replace every 30,000 miles/36 months, or as necessary |
Inspect at each oil change interval, replace as necessary |
Change engine oil and replace oil filter |
As indicated by the oil change monitor in the instrument cluster display |
Do not exceed a maximum 10,000 miles/12 month period between oil changes OR 8,000 miles/6 months if using a biodiesel blend greater than B5 [1]. When using biodiesel blends greater than B5, do NOT follow engine oil change monitor as it will not compensate for interval adjustment; driver must keep track of mileage and service accordingly. |
Drain fuel water separator, replace fuel filter |
Replace fuel filter every 30,000 miles/36 months when using conventional no. 2 diesel or up to B5 biodiesel blends. Replace fuel filter every 20,000 miles or 24 months when using a biodiesel blend greater than B5. |
EcoDiesel is rated for a maximum B20 biodiesel blend; more concentrated biodiesel fuels may cause premature fuel system component failure |
Flush and service engine cooling system |
Service cooling system every 150,000 miles or 10 years |
Recommend cooling system flush, replacement of thermostat, upper/lower radiator hoses, and overflow tank cap |
Replace serpentine belt |
Every 100,000 miles/10 years, or as necessary |
Inspect at each oil change interval, replace as necessary |
Change automatic transmission fluid |
N/A - transmission service not specified by FCA |
From the Ram 1500 owners manual: "Under normal operating conditions, the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle." |
Change transfer case fluid |
Every 120,000 miles/12 years under normal conditions |
Replace transfer case fluid immediately if gearbox becomes submerged in water |
Change front differential fluid |
Every 20,000 miles/ 24 months if towing frequently or vehicle is used off-road |
Service interval unspecified under normal operating conditions; replace immediately if differential is submerged in water |
Change rear differential fluid |
[1] Biodiesel fuels have a tendency to contribute to greater fuel dilution, thus more frequent oil changes are necessary.

[1] Refill capacities are for reference only; always bring fluid level to proper dipstick indicator, fill plug level, etc. "Quarts" or "qts" refers to fluid measured in U.S. quarts.
[2] 2020+ model year Ram 1500 EcoDiesel requires API SN engine oil meeting FCA material spec MS-12991. This specification is met by Amsoil 5W-40 FS Euro spec synthetic diesel motor oil. Recommend Amsoil engine oils for their superior resilience to thermal, mechanical, and chemical breakdown, particularly in modern applications with exhaust aftertreatment systems.
