Chrysler/Dodge 48RE

48RE Transmission The 48RE transmission is a heavy duty transmission based on the 47RE, but proved to be much more reliable and stronger than the 47RE. Like its counterpart, the transmission has its limits and a 48RE can quickly be killed when the ouput of the Cummins diesel is increased. While it has a good reputation, most can agree the transmission needed a 5th gear like the Ford TorqShift or Allison 1000 to keep the Cummins diesel in its peak torque range.
