2.8L Cummins Turbodiesel (R2.8, ISF2.8, QSF2.8)

The Cummins ISF2.8 is an inline 4 cylinder turbodiesel used exclusively in European and Asian markets, as there are no current on-highway applications in the U.S. However, its development had at least one U.S. application in mind, and it could very easily find its way into the domestic market in the future. Cummins worked closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Nissan Motors in the development of a highly fuel efficient fullsize pickup beginning in 2010, in what was codenamed the "ATLAS" project. Ultimately, this concept did not deliver on its intended goals, although Cummins would later provide 5.0L turbodiesels for Nissan's Titan XD.

2.8L Cummins I-4 Information

The ATLAS project sought to produce a 2.8L Cummins powered fullsize Nissan Titan pickup. Nissan would later take an alternative course, selecting instead a brawny 5.0L V-8 turbodiesel manufactured by Cummins. Fast forward to 2017, when Cummins unveiled the R2.8 - the company's first crate engine specifically designed and tailored to diesel conversions. The bulk of the information featured herein will focus on the R2.8, although many of the engine's specifications and features are similar to the ISF2.8, and its industrial/agricultural variant, the QSF2.8.

While the ISF2.8 is manufactured in China, the R2.8 is assembled in the U.S.A with global materials. The crate engine is sold as a package, which includes the components that are vital to retrofitting the engine into nearly any application. This includes, but is not limited to, the accessory drive (alternator, power steering pump), vacuum pump, fuel filter/water separator assembly, remote oil filter system, engine control module (ECM), starter, flywheel, accelerator pedal assembly, and the basic engine wiring harness. The engine is available from Cummins Inc directly as well as a growing number of dealers.
