3.2 Power Stroke Maintenance Schedule
Service procedures that are required at a declared vehicle mileage OR time interval should be performed at the point where either the mileage OR the time is reached, whichever should come first. The 3.2L Power Stroke equipped Ford Transit falls under the "severe" or "heavy duty" service category if any of the following is true:
• Vehicle is idled excessively (greater than 10 minutes of idling within a 60 minute period of time)
• Vehicle is driven at slow speeds (25 mph or less) regularly and/or experiences heavy stop-and-go traffic conditions
• Vehicle is operated in extremely hot (> 100° F) or cold (< -9° F) weather conditions
• Vehicle is operated off-road or in dusty conditions
• Vehicle is used to tow a trailer 1,000 miles or more between service intervals
• Vehicle is driven at high speeds at or near its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
Vehicles that are operated on biodiesel fuel blends should consider more frequent fuel system service intervals. Note that the 3.2L Power Stroke diesel is only certified for up to B20 biodiesel blends (20% biodiesel, 80% petroleum diesel). Biodiesel is sometimes marketed as renewable or biomass diesel fuel.
Normal Service Intervals
Service Procedure | Service Interval(s) |
Replace engine oil & oil filter | As instructed by the intelligent oil-life monitor system [1] Do not exceed 10,000 miles/12 months between oil changes |
Replace fuel filter | Every 30,000 miles or as instructed [2] |
Replace engine air filter | Every 30,000 miles or as required |
Replace foam engine pre-filter | Every 45,000 miles or as required |
Serpentine belt | Every 150,000 miles or as required |
Flush/service engine cooling systems | 100,000 miles/6 years initially Every 50,000 miles/3 years thereafter |
Replace automatic transmission fluid & filter | Every 100,000 miles |
Replace rear differential fluid | Every 150,000 miles [3],[4] |
[1] - Intelligent oil-life monitor will indicate when oil changes are needed based on driving conditions
[2] - Fuel filter should be replaced anytime the water-in-fuel indicator is illuminated
[3] - Replace differential fluid immediately if submerged in water; water intrusion probable
[4] - If using conventional gear oil (non-synthetic), replace fluid every 3,000 miles/3 years; Ford spec calls for a full synthetic gear oil to be replaced at 150,000 mile intervals
Severe/Heavy Duty Service Intervals
Service Procedure | Service Interval(s) |
Replace engine oil & oil filter | As instructed by the intelligent oil-life monitor system [5] Do not exceed 3,000 miles/6 months between oil changes |
Replace fuel filter | Every 30,000 miles [6] |
Replace engine air filter | Every 30,000 miles [7] |
Replace foam engine pre-filter | Every 45,000 miles [7] |
Serpentine belt | Every 150,000 miles or as required |
Flush/service engine cooling systems | 100,000 miles/6 years initially Every 50,000 miles/3 years thereafter |
Replace automatic transmission fluid & filter | Every 100,000 miles |
Replace rear differential fluid | Every 150,000 miles [8] |
[5] - Intelligent oil-life monitor will indicate when oil changes are needed based on driving conditions
[6] - Consider more frequent fuel system service if using biodiesel fuel blends
[7] - Check engine air filter and pre-filter condition if operating off-road or in dusty environments and replace as required
[8] - Use full synthetic gear oil, replace differential fluid immediately if submerged in water; water intrusion probable

Engine Oil Viscosity Chart
Note that the oil viscosity chart was altered for the 2017 model year Ford Transit, removing the SAE 5W-30 and 0W-30 options. While this is likely to due to redundancy, we recommend following the later viscosity chart and selecting either a SAE 5W-40 engine oil unless the ambient temperature is below -20° F, at which point a SAE 0W-40 engine oil will be required. All motor oils used in the 3.2L Power Stroke must API CJ-4 or CJ-4/SM specifications.
Oil & Fluid Specifications
Fluid Type | Oil/Fluid Specification | Remarks |
Engine oil | SAE 5W-40 recommended in ambient temperatures > -20° F Recommend Amsoil Signature Series 5W-40 synthetic diesel oil |
[9] |
SAE 0W-40 required in ambient temperatures < -20° F Recommend Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40 synthetic diesel oil |

[10] - A 50/50 mixture of Motorcraft Orange engine coolant and water provides freezing protection down to -34° F. Do not exceed a 60/40 or 40/60 coolant-to-water ratio. Do not add water to prediluted coolant solutions. Do not mix different coolant types/colors.
[11] - Limited slip differentials may require an additive to prevent chatter; use Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier
