General Motors has confirmed its next generation Duramax diesel will have a colossal 8.3 liter displacement. The news has come in the form of a 37 second video posted to YouTube and a short statement posted on the company's ordinary channels, including at news.gm.com. No further details have been released and any information provided outside of the announcement is, at this point, nothing more than conjecture.
From the 2027 Silverado vehicle order guide we do know that the new engine is a V-8 and will use RPO code L6P.
The announcement paints a clear picture that General Motors will achieve power and torque superiority with the new "Mongoose" Duramax engine. In case you missed it, the Scorpion is a reference to Ford's 6.7 liter Power Stroke V-8. During its development it was given this name due to the arrangement of the turbocharger and plumbing, which gave it a scorpion-like appearance. Ford's engine is rated at a peak 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque, which creates an interesting narrative - how high will GM go, and does Ford have anymore to give their flagship turbodiesel.
The news comes at an interesting time as there's been a growing consensus that this segment has reached its ceiling in terms of power, torque, and capability; just how much higher can the bar be set? It is no coincidence that the next-generation Duramax Diesel is being released for 2027 as emissions regulations are once again tightening. In fact, Cummins significantly revamped its 6.7 liter Turbodiesel for 2025 to meet the upcoming emissions standards. Despite an array of airflow and efficiency improvements, the Cummins powered Ram HD gained a mere 10 horsepower and torque remained at 1,075 lb-ft.
