General Motors 8L90-E Automatic Transmission

GM 8L90 8 Speed Transmission Specs & Information

The 8L90-E 8 speed automatic transmission was designed as a replacement for the 6L80-E 6 speed transmission in various Chevrolet and GMC applications. It was introduced to the Silverado/Sierra 1500 lineup for the 2015 model year, but only for trucks equipped with the 6.2L V-8. Since then, the transmission has been coupled to various engines while being phased out of certain configurations in favor of GM's 10 speed automatic transmission. It is likely that the 10 speed transmission will eventually replace the 8L90 altogether, at least in most applications. The 8L90 was also utilized in the 2015 - 2019 Chevrolet Corvette, although this variation features a unique case design since the transmission mounts directly to the transaxle. All applications except the Corvette feature a bellhousing integrated into the transmission case.

[1] GM's service schedule suggests that, under normal driving conditions, the 8 speed automatic transmission requires no service other than routine fluid level verification. However, most vehicles will fall under the "severe" category at some point during the life of the vehicle. Thus, we recommend all vehicles have the transmission serviced at 45,000 mile internals in order to preserve transmission life and reliability.
