Cummins, Power Stroke, Duramax Power/Torque by Year

GM's first serious pursuit in the diesel pickup segment was the 6.2 liter V-8 designed by its Detroit Diesel division. After bringing it to market for the 1982 model year, Ford answered with the International Harvester built 6.9 liter IDI the following year. Although Dodge would take a few years to get on board, putting a 5.9 liter Cummins turbodiesel in their D and W series pickup trucks would become a legendary decision.

Although things have begun to cool down in recent years, the diesel truck segment has historicaly grown increasingly competitive with manufacturers continuously pushing to offer more potent powertrain configurations. The tables below serve as a historical reference to the horsepower and torque ratings offered by each of the "Big 3" automaker's diesel options over the years. Note that these figures are specific to pickup trucks, thus available power and torque ratings for chassis cab trucks, vans, and other commercial vehicles may not be accurately reflected.
