Ford's F-450 remains a vital buffer in the battle for tow ratings between Ford and GM, whose 1 ton models (F-350 & 3500 HD) offer similar capabilities. But even the F-450 couldn't keep Ram from reigning supreme as the King of tow ratings for 2013. An underdog for several years now, the Ram 3500 HD emerges from the shadows with a more potent power plant, heavy duty drivetrain upgrades, and structural enhancements that give it a gross combined vehicle weight rating of up to 37,600 lbs with a max 5th wheel tow rating of 29,970 lbs. Ram didn't just surpass their competitors in GCVW and 5th wheel towing, they left them in the dust. GM and Ford remain at top in terms of conventional towing and payload, though the new Ram HD platform could be dangerously close to taking those titles as well. GM continues to offer the 397 hp Duramax-Allison combo, Ford the 400 hp 6.7L Power Stroke mated to its heavy duty TorqShift, while the Ram's new loaded gun is an optional 385 hp, 850 lb-ft H.O. 6.7L Cummins mated to an Aisin 6 speed auto transmission.
