2023 Highlights - Heavy Duty Diesel Pickup Truck Segment
• New from Ford is a High Output variant of its 6.7L Power Stroke diesel rated at a peak 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque; both figures set new record highs and lead the segment for the 2023 model year. The High Output Power Stroke is available on all F-250, F-350, and F-450 models. Slight but noticeable revisions to the Super Duty platform, including capability improvements, allow it to reclaim multiple best-in-class titles for the diesel pickup segment.
• The 6.6L Duramax diesel remains unchanged for 2023 with GM banking on improvements for the 2024 model year, including a redesigned 2500HD/3500HD platform. The 2024 Duramax will peak at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, a 25 horsepower and 65 lb-ft improvement. While this change may seem marginal, the 6.6L Duramax has been a dominant competitor in the segment since its introduction in 2001. Unlike its competitors, GM has continued to engage customers and garner popularity without a clean-slate engine update or displacement change.
• Ram continues to advertise best-in-class towing for its Ram 3500 models despite Ford's own contention to the thrown. While the Ram 3500 claim comes with a disclaimer excluding the F-450, a properly equipped F-350 Super Duty defeats the Ram by nearly 1,000 lbs in the Gooseneck category, 5,000 lbs in 5th wheel towing capability, and a staggering 10,000 lbs in the bumper pull class. The Ram HD powertrain platforms remain unchanged for the 2023 model year, with the High Output 6.7L Cummins remaining available only in Ram 3500 models. Rumors of an 8 speed automatic transmission finding its way into the future lineup continue to stir chatter.
